Chenda and the Airship Brofman Emilie P Bush 9781449542542 Books
This book I found by typing in steampunk myserties. And was pleasantly rewarded with one of the few hallmarks of such a world that doesn't involve darkness and despair as the general theme. It starts at a funeral of a great man brought down before his time and a far younger widow left in the wake and is at first at a loss as to what to do, let alone her own identity. This also does follow one steampunk hallmark that too many authors have avoided for some reason: airships and thier crews, the clothing that both crew and passengers wld need... yes, I'm a stickler for details.
Then, 2/3s way through, it adds a new element, magic. A wonderful surprise if only in the way it was woven in and even explained earlier mysteries in the storyline.
With out ruining the tale, it is a wonderful story and brilliantly writen. A heluva ride from start to finish. Highly recomended!

Chenda and the Airship Brofman Emilie P Bush 9781449542542 Books Reviews
Wow! What a fun ride and on an airship to boot! I love to read and have read a lot of different genres but this is my first "Steampunk" novel (& thanks to a good experience with the Airship Brofman- and it's first officer, Lieutenant Fenimore Dulal- it won't be my last! Although, I imagine it will be hard to find characters by other authors, that I love as much as these.)
I do not know this author so please know this review is unbiased in that way. I did however, ) wholeheartedly agree with the review here on , written by a friend of hers, titled "One Great Read." & Other reviewers (and a great video ad for the book on YouTube) have already mentioned the story line, so this review isn't "plot-driven" lol, but more about the experience and how much I enjoyed her lovely writing style. (I did think the plot was great though.)
I am mostly an artist and sometimes writer (have to use that expensive English Lit. Major somehow, lol!) and I found the book from my love of the Steampunk art that shows imaginative machines. I had heard of Steampunk novels through another author that I like and when I read the reviews for that steampunk book, there were reviews that said there were better ones out there.. so I went looking for one! Wow- Lucky me to hit it right the first time out of the gate! I put steampunk novel in the search box and saw some that looked like they had too much overt darkness or vampiric lore or zombie gore in them for my more innocent inventor Victorian liking. Now.. before any vampire aficionados bite down my neck ;) let me add that I was specifically looking for Steampunk inventions and creativity in a story line that was something new (and the vampire/zombie thing has been done to "death" in every possible and impossible genre already, IMHO.) When I saw this one and saw the simple yet great cover, I was compelled to go to the author's website where I liked what I saw by way of her originality.
I read the first chapter and while she is most generous to be giving the story away on her website at one chapter per week.. after reading some of it, I was already hooked and didn't want to wait. In fact, I didn't even want to wait for the two days amazing would have nicely gotten it to me in. So adding to my list of "firsts" - this first being reading an electronic version of a book- I bought the "kindle" version to read on my iPod & I must say that was the best $3.00 I ever spent. Although my husband may disagree- ha ha- as the book kept me up way too late for 3 nights in a row. Reading in the dark is now more fun (no heavy book with a flashlight, etc.) Also, reading the electronic version was interesting because I didn't know at first how to look at the interface, to see when it was going to end. So after many lovely hours in these characters company, when I saw the chapter heading called "epilogue" I thought, "oh no" it's almost over and I didn't want the exotic journey to end. (That's not to say that Emilie P. Bush didn't end it well- she definitely did! and I am most assuredly looking forward to the sequel.)
It was fun for me to read her descriptions of things like the Airship Brofman and the places they went but even more exciting for me was that she is such a consistently smooth writer. Emilie P. Bush has beautiful pacing and character development and good choices of words. She didn't make the mistake of using words, or things, that would have pulled us out of that story and into the present. The elements of steampunk, romance and violence in the story are well done. There were only a couple of scenes that made me queasy (heads on pikes and head bashing) that I personally could have done without, but those scenes aren't dwelled on overmuchly and fit the story line when they show up. The descriptions of the scenery and the four elements of Fire, Air/wind, Water and Earth are wonderful. I especially liked the scene where the wind helps Chenda with her grief. I could feel for the characters when they were exhausted or thirsty or cold and the descriptions of the cool-looking but warmth-inducing clothing necessary for an airship- made me wish I could go right out and buy some. )
I really loved the men (and the women too, btw) in the story. I truly liked them all but Fenimore wins hands down for the MOST wonderful man I've ever had the pleasure of reading. For instance, I like the men that Jane Austen wrote but if given the choice, I would say, "Give me Fenimore over Darcy any day!" The interactions between him and Chenda (the main female in the story) were perfectly paced, lovely, sustained and suspenseful in all the right ways. The humorous touches in their dialogue was "spot on".
(This bit in the parentheses here is a possible spoiler alert so you may want to skip down to the next paragraph if you haven't read the book yet,....Dear Emilie P. Bush.. please tell me the captain gave the honeymooners Candice's former cabin for a night or two at least!...) )
I was amazed at how the flow of the story matched the experience of flying on an airship. Not that I've ever been on one ;) ... but reading her work makes me feel like I have now. Thank you Emilie, for the breath-taking flight and the great characters that will stay with me for a long time.
This book really drew me in, and I found myself staying up until 130 a.m. on several occasions because I just couldn't put it down. Ms. Bush has done an excellent job building a believable world, where the steampunk elements fit seamlessly into the narrative. The back stories for the Republic and Empire, as well as for the characters themselves, lend an air of realism to the story. This book was a really fun adventure from start to finish, and Ms. Bush let us see Chenda's development from a naive, sheltered girl to a strong, confident woman. I've already bought The Gospel According to Verdu and look forward to reading it.
I anticipated that "Chenda and the Airship Brofman" would be a good book, what I found was that it was an excellent book. Very well written and printed, this book was a well-paced adventure that even with it's attention to detail, did not bog down the reading with overly technical description. Having only experienced steampunk in anime and film, I had no problem getting caught up in this tale that was hard to put down once I got started. Given the chance, "Chenda and the Airship Brofman" would make a nice start to a series of adventures. After finishing the book, and finally placing it on the bookshelf, I have but one thing left to say, "More please."
The story starts out great and is very intriguing. A woman's life gets turned upside down as she must undertake an adventure that changes not only herself but an entire nation. Unfortunately (and this is just me, mind you) the second half of the book gets bogged down in romance. Now granted, there are millions of people out there that love a romantic read, it's just a personal preference for me. If the love interest had been toned down, or had been developed more gradually into the next book, it would have been more tolerable for me. Other than that, I loved how it had a "Last Airbender" feel, and you will know what I mean if you pick it up and give it a try.
Keep in mind I am a reader, not a writer. This book is written by a friend of mine. I read the first chapter on her blog and begged her to publish it so I could read the rest. I was not disappointed. I LOVED this book.
As any great book this one was very hard to put down at night. Yes, I had a few bad mornings after reading just a few more pages. She wrote about people who you could believe to be real, who you wanted to believe in, who you want to learn more about. The story in enjoyable, with some technical talk that I could believe in and understand, yet put it "not here/now". It is not a romance, yet has some. It is not a thriller, yet has it's moments. It is not a travel log but talks of another place. I guess the best way to put it is... I liked the end, it felt "right" but I want more.
