For a first time reader of his work, it took me a while to get in to Willie Russell's style of writing and inclusion of poems. However, once I got used to it, I couldn't put it down. It was beautifully structured with parts of the story happening retrospectively which surprised and kept me interested. I will definitely try some more of his books.

Raymond James Marks is The Wrong Boy in Willy Russell’s comic /tragic novel about a boy in the UK who gets into all sorts of trouble. But, according to Raymond, he is really not to blame and he tells his side of the story to Morrissey, the leader of a band called The Smiths with such songs as “Barbarism begins at Home” and “Girlfriend in a Coma.” Raymond’s misadventures start when he and a group of boys play a game involving catching flies with their penises. The stern headmaster of the school decides to blame Raymond as the ringleader and expels him. Things continue down hill for Raymond and he is sent on a trip to Grimsby to work on a building site, arranged by his uncle who he refers to as “my Uncle Bastard Jason.” Along the way he tells his side of the story in letters to Morrissey. Raymond’s grandmother (Gran) and mother (Mam) are heroic figures in the story, as are his two friends, Norman Gorman and Twinky McDevitt. Raymond spends much of his time trying to refute the negative views adults have of him.

For me, Raymond is a kind of everyone. Who among us has not been unfairly criticized or scorned? Russell’s message is to stand up for who you are and don’t let what other people think of you affect your life. The one drawback that I had with the story is that the author makes Raymond out to have serious mental problems that in the end almost crush his efforts to be a “normal” boy. But the novel ends on a high note as Raymond finds that he is not a “wrong” boy but just a different boy and that is OK.

I recommend this book highly. It is the kind of story that stays with you long after you have finished reading it, and may change your life for the better, whether you are a Raymond or a Bastard Uncle Jason.
This is quite simply one of the best novels I have ever read.
