I was always a huge fan of Vlautin's lyrical work with Richmond Fontaine, so when he started publishing his stories I was very excited. HIs first three novels were great heartbreaking, sparse, intimate, and beautifully-written portraits of down and out everyday people of the West. I love how rooted his stories are in place (whether it is WA, OR, or NV). I really loved "Lean on Pete," and couldn't put it down, despite my frequently-misted eyesight ). "The Fall" continues Willy's run of excellence. As usual, he brings to life the desperate, downtrodden, unsung characters of everyday Western life and makes them hauntingly unforgettable. For all the heartbreak, there is just as much hope packed into these pages. No surprise--this is one of the best books of the year, and further evidence that Vlautin is one of the best American writers of his generation.
This novel was incredibly moving, gut wrenching, actually. These are not characters; they are real people, "living lives of quiet desperation." Pauline, Freddie, Darla, Leroy, Jeanette - Every presidential candidate should know you all, and your struggles to stay afloat in the sinking ship that is modern day America, and how you manage to love, and connect, and be deeply generous. One of the best books I have read in the past year.
I can’t remember ever being as invested in characters as quickly as I was with this book. But for all the promise of the first 2/3 of the book, it finished weakly. Over all it was a worthwhile read.
This book surprised me by how drawn into the characters I was and by how reflective of this life we lead. It is an appropriate, timely portrayal of regular life, and it seems to perfectly capture this particularly sad moment in our America. Hopeful/hopeless, defeated/determined. The condition of humans trying to live in pain and rise above it. The struggle of the working man/woman trying to live and love against the downward pull of gravity.
Excellent book by an author with whom I was unfamiliar. The story feels like a cross between Raymond Carver stories and The Road by Cormac McCarthy. It follows three characters whose lives intersect, and who are marginalized to a greater or lesser extent. One character’s dream metaphorically characterizes the story. In it are people who have The Mark (receive federal assistance or other government entitlement) and The Free (a vigilante group which seeks out and kills people with The Mark). Characterization is excellent. The plot tension is maintained, especially as the book moves on. It’s easy to relate to the characters, to walk in their shoes. A deep thread of humanity runs throughout. The author has an understanding of the characters’ plights, and of their plights’ complex effects on the characters’ personalities. The story ends with hope for some of the characters.
Idk. It just kind of ended. One loose thread, but that’s life. Maybe I say it “just ended” because I didn’t want it to end. I wanted to see what happened further with one of the characters. The book seemed to open a door to view the lives of several related characters, then after a time, gently close the door and the view into their lives. The book is very simply written—no prose or play on words or pretty descriptions in this book, just plain storytelling in the sparest way possible. Very likable and believable characters; in spite of the spare writing style, I’ll miss them.
If you have read Willy Vlautin's work before, you know what you are in for here sharp, clear, very real-feeling characters who each have their own perspectives, lives and burdens to bear, and who each are working the best then can with what life has given them. How they meet and interact is where the aching beauty comes in whether it's someone who just wants his misery to stop, or one who has seen plenty and still finds a way to bring a smile to someone else's face, or another who calmly soldiers on despite all adversity, Vlautin's writing is clear-eyed and haunting. I reached the end of this book far too soon... i could have spent twice as much time with these characters. My only quibble would have been that there are characters whose storylines I initially felt were left unfinished, but upon further reflection i decided that is how life is... sometimes you just don't know what happens to some people you've met. You meet, and go on your separate ways, never knowing what happens to them. Tackling simultaneous threads of health care, treatment of veterans, economic divides, and the amazing job that nurses do, this book is well worth your time.
