This is a sweet story about a boy and his devotion to his pet pig, his hero father and his friend Paloma Lee. Renzo adopts Marty when he is a small piglet, but as he grows it is more and more difficult to keep him as a pet, especially when his family might lose their farm. Renzo does everything he can to keep Marty safe and their friendship alive. Renzo also learns a lot about his father, who died before Renzo was born. Some of it is hard to understand and his admiration of his father changes a bit. The other important relationship is with his best friend. Renzo and Paloma Lee have dreams to run away together and become music stars.

Although there are some sad topics in this story, the overall picture is one of joy in the relationships Renzo has and maintains. It was uplifting to read about such a good-hearted boy. The story was quick to read because it was engaging throughout. It's recommended for ages 10 to 14 and I think that's a good range. It could be a read aloud for younger readers not yet comfortable with this size book, but there will probably need to be a little outside discussion about some of the topics presented. My daughter read Saving Marty and said she liked it very much. I'm glad it's in our home library.
I could not put this book down. That is a strange statement for an adult to make about a book for young readers.This first person narrative draws the reader in from the first page. The story begins when 11 year old Renzo (Lorenzo) gets a writing assignment from his teacher "what is a hero?". He is on a journey of discovery about himself, his father, and how he fits into his big world. His best friend "Pal" (Paloma) complements him and shows that boys and girls can truly be friends. As a former high school English teacher, I know how important students' reading for pleasure is. This book belongs in every school library, and would make an excellent gift. This book is a treasure! And yes, Renzo's conclusion about a "hero" is a lesson well- learned.
Growing up is hard, particularly when your father is dead and your mom and grandfather are struggling to keep the family orchard. Lorenzo Ventura, an eleven-year old who is large for his age, has only letters from his deceased father, Marty, to comfort him and to fill the void left by his absence. Together with his best friend, Paloma Lee, Renzo dreams of moving to Los Angeles and there, becoming music stars. Paloma’s father, a single parent and a police officer, often leaves her to spend the night with the Ventura family. Paloma’s mother died when Paloma was younger, giving her another thing in common with Renzo.

Renzo’s mother sells their sow and her litter. She inadvertently missed the runt of the litter that Renzo finds among their dog’s newborn puppies. He adopts the piglet, naming it “Marty” after the father he never knew. A series of incidents involving Marty; a dog race in which Renzo, hoping to win the prize, enters Marty; several encounters with bullies – both youthful and adult – and the opportunity Paloma receives, all play into the lessons Marty must learn as he matures and accepts that his perceived views of individuals may not be accurate.

“Saving Marty” is much more than a book about a boy and his pet pig. Paul Griffin has a unique ability to understand the minds of ‘tweens, their concerns, and their dreams. He writes in such a way that the emotions expressed are authentic and relatable. Renzo must cope with jealousy and decide whether his friendship with Paloma is more important than his pride. He must accept that change, especially due to economic circumstances, is not always personally desirable but may be best for the family. He must accept that his perception about an individual is based on his not knowing the truth. Knowing the truth, he must decide whether to move forward, or whether to allow his hurt and anger to overcome him.

Paul Griffin is one of my favorite authors for the 10 – 14 year target group. As in his other books, “Saving Marty” addresses the lives of ‘tweens without minimizing their concerns. He allows them to triumph over the challenges in their lives in a realistic and achievable manner. He uses language and situations that are appropriate for the target group as well as for younger, but more skilled readers. “Saving Marty” is definitely a five star book and one I will be recommending to others.
I was first introduced to Paul Griffin in his heart-breaking book "When Friendship Followed Me Home". I loved the book and even though the story itself was sad, there was such a hopeful tone to it that I couldn't put it down. "Saving Marty" is just as wonderful as "Friendship".

In this book, there is a boy and his pig. The pig is a runt that gets left behind when mom and piglets are sold for slaughter. So this little piggy, Marty, gets raised with a bunch of puppies and decides he must be a dog. This is all well and good and fun, until he becomes 400 pounds and no longer fits in your lap. Marty gets into mischief because of his size and soon the sad truth has to be realized. I'll let you read the story to find out what it is.

This is also the story of Lorenzo, the boy. He has grown up without a father, whom everyone hails as a war hero and Lorenzo connects to his dad through music. His mother and his grandfather, affectionately called "Double" are trying to save their meager fruit farm that sells mediocre peaches when Marty joins the family. Lorenzo dreams of the Pacific Ocean, California and becoming a famous musician with his best friend, Paloma Lee, aka Pal.

This is a coming of age story, but not in the typical sense. Most boys in coming of age stories don't have a giant pig for a pet. Lorenzo is not your typical protagonist. It is a wonderful story, however, but be prepared to shed a few tears. I know I did.

I read this book in two sittings. Paul Griffin is a talented YA novelist and he writes such beautiful characters. I look forward to more of his stories but I think they should come with a mandatory packet of Kleenex.
